In 1993, Alabama managed to entice the
Mercedes Company of Germany to build its
new automobile plant near the little town of
Vance just east of Tuscaloosa. Upon reading
the news, a few verses about rednecks in
Mercedes began to form in my head. I must
admit that I borrowed the format and the first
few lines from Janis Joplin.
Alabama-Benz
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz,
For such fancy wheels, I’d give up my sins.
Worked hard all my life, have nothing but friends,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz.
Can you believe a Mercedes pick-up truck.
Colored red, it could sure change my luck.
I will take it hunting and shoot a big buck.
Can you believe a Mercedes pick-up truck.
Oh Lord, keep me on the right track.
Let it be delivered with a golden gun rack.
I’ll drive down the road with my dog in the back.
Oh Lord, keep me on the right track.
Dressed in my overalls and Caterpillar cap,
I’ll cruise the town with a girl on my lap,
Or park under a tree and take a short nap.
Dressed in my overalls and Caterpillar cap.
